Behind the story
Vero & Stone was founded on a single object that was never for sale — and on the belief that a piece of jewelry is not an ornament but a place to put something you don't want to lose.
The founder
She grew up in Valenza, the small Piedmont town where a third of Italy's gold has been worked for a century. Her grandfather, Tomas Vero, was a setter there for fifty-one years. He set stones into pieces that carried other houses' names, and he never once signed his own.
Elena trained at his bench from the age of nine. She spent the next eleven years setting for maisons in Milan and Geneva, learning that the difference between a good piece and a lasting one is measured in tenths of a millimetre and years of patience.
In 2019 she left, took a lease on two rooms in San Francisco, and put her grandfather's name on the door for the first time.

The name
Tomas kept one rough sapphire in a folded paper packet in the drawer beneath his bench. Buyers asked for it for forty years. He refused every one of them, and never explained why.
He left it to Elena in 2017. It is still uncut, still in the same packet, and still not for sale. It sits in the atelier where clients can see it.
That stone is the second half of the name, and the whole of the idea: some things are worth more kept than spent. Every piece we make is built to be the thing someone keeps.
The bench
Every setting starts as a pencil drawing at full scale. Nothing is designed on a screen, because a screen will let you draw something the metal cannot hold.
Stones are set by hand, one at a time, with a graver. A bezel takes forty minutes. A setter takes eleven years. There is no version of this that goes faster.
The engraving goes on at the end, by hand, on the clasp plate. It is the only part of the piece that belongs to one person and no one else.
The house
He sets stones for houses in Milan, Paris and Geneva for fifty-one years. His name appears on none of it.
She is given a graver, a loupe and a box of scrap silver, and told to make the same ring until it is right.
Tomas leaves Elena the uncut sapphire he refused to sell for forty years. It is still uncut today.
Two rooms, one bench, and eleven pieces in the first collection. The Valenza bench stays open and still cuts for us.
Three ateliers, fourteen pieces in the standing collection, and a build service so a bracelet can be added to for as long as someone wears it.
We buy from four cutters we have visited. Each stone travels with a written record of where it came from and who cut it, and that record goes to the client with the piece.
4 cutters · 100% documentedAll gold and silver in the collection is reclaimed and re-refined. It is indistinguishable at the bench from newly mined metal, which is rather the point.
100% reclaimed since 2019Re-stringing, clasp work and re-setting are free for as long as you own the piece. A house that will not repair its own work was never building for the long term.
Lifetime service · no chargeTell Odette the occasion and she will set the strand — base, charms, spacing and the engraving. Or come to a bench and we will do it together.
